Class & Workshop Descriptions

Level One Watercolor-Beginning: This class is for those who are new to watercolor or would like to take a more detailed version of the Beginner's Watercolor Workshop. We will set up our palettes together, discuss tools and materials, learn the basic washes and brush strokes, and practice together each step of the way. We will learn and practice techniques to develop a a better understanding of the exciting medium of watercolor. Drawings will be provided by the instructor who will demonstrate and paint with students, step-by-step. Subject matter will be geared to student's interests as much as possible. Supply list at the bottom of this page.

Level Two Watercolor-Intermediate: This class is for those who have previously taken watercolor classes, who have a basic understanding of the four basic washes, and brush handling, and would like to expand and challenge their skills in developing realistic paintings. Drawings will be provided by the instructor who will demonstrate and paint with students, step-by-step. Subject matter will be geared to student's interests as much as possible. Supply list at the bottom of this page.

Level Three Watercolor-Advanced: This class is for those who have experience with watercolor, who have a thorough understanding of the four basic washes and good brush handling skills. This is an advanced class for those who would like to expand and challenge their skills in developing their knowledge of color theory, value, composition, as well as explore their own Visual Voice. Projects will be geared to expand horizons in creativity, technical handling of the medium of watercolor, and will include projects that explore the medium indepth. Student's may bring in their own projects for group overviews and critiques. Critique time and participation is critical in this class. Supply list at the bottom of this page.

Drawing Class:
Do you want to learn to draw what you see? Several innovative drawing methods are taught in this class to help strengthen your eye-hand coordination. Demonstrations by instructor and hands-on experimentation with several different drawing mediums. Students will explore composition, problem solving, and learn simple ways to correctly render realistic, believable images. This is a great class for people who already paint, but want to improve their drawing skills.

Supply List

Watercolor Students Please Bring
• Sketchbook, any kind
• No. 2 Pencil
• 2” Wide Masking Tape (Not blue painter’s tape, please!)
• Graphite paper or large graphite stick
• Small water bottle for wetting palette
• 11” x 14” pad of Arches 140 lb. watercolor paper, or equivalent/No Strathmore
• 1” Flat brush, natural hair, or natural hair/synthetic blend
• No. 10 round brush, natural hair or natural hair/synthetic blend
• No. 6 round brush, natural hair or natural hair/synthetic blend
• Palette with large mixing wells and 1” or wider paint wells
• Paints: These or similar colors: Windsor Newton (Professional Grade) Pigments: Aureolin Yellow, New Gamboge, Winsor Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Hookers Green, Permanent Sap Green, Cerulean Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Indigo. Any other colors you may like to use.
• White Vinyl Eraser
• Large water container (1 lb. deli tub works great)
• Paper Towel
• Helpful, but not required: atomizer/spritzer/spray bottle, scissors, craft knife, masking fluid, sandpaper, etc.

Art Supplies may be purchased at Ralph's Art Supply of Melbourne, located on Highland Ave., in the Eau Gallie Art District. Tell them you are taking Debbie Johnson's class.

• Large newsprint pad (18” x 24”)
• Graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B (not all required, bring a variety)
• Kneaded eraser
• Pink Pearl eraser
• Pencil sharpener
• Portable Drawing Board
